Mallorca’s most beautiful beaches attract countless visitors every year. With abundant sunshine and sea, the Balearic island offers numerous stunning spots for swimming and sunbathing. To help you find the perfect beach for your needs, we present a two-part series featuring some of the best coastal areas. We begin with the northern and eastern regions, home to many hidden coves. Some are secluded, while others are popular among locals and tourists, but large crowds are generally rare.
Mallorca’s Most Beautiful Beaches on the North Coast
Cala Deià
It’s hard to believe, but beneath the steep cliffs that cradle the artist village of Deià, there lies a breathtaking small pebble beach. The best approach is to park a bit farther away and walk down, as the parking lot is usually full in summer. The path to the cove is stunning, winding along a stream lined with fruit orchards—though it rarely carries water in the hotter months. The beach is framed by forested cliffs, weathered boathouses, and two excellent seafood restaurants, creating a cozy atmosphere. The sea here is refreshingly cool and crystal clear. If you love tranquility and individuality, Cala Deià will charm you. In that case, the nearby enchanting holiday estate Residencia Deià would be a perfect match for you.
Playa de Formentor
Nestled on the protected Cap de Formentor peninsula, this picturesque beach lies in the western part of the turquoise-blue Bay of Pollença. Stretching over 800 meters in a graceful arc, the narrow coastal strip features fine white sand interspersed with rocky sections, gently sloping into the sea. Pine forests and mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop for your visit, whether you relax on rentable sun loungers, engage in watersports, or take a trip to the nearby Illa de Formentor, about a kilometer offshore. The beach offers excellent amenities, including a boat dock, restaurants, showers, and toilets. The historic Hotel Formentor, which once hosted legends like John Wayne and Winston Churchill, is also located here. If you prefer a more private and authentically Mallorcan stay, Villa Panoramic View Pollensa is a great alternative, offering easy access for half- and full-day beach excursions.
Playa Son Serra de Marina
This beach is certainly not for everyone. However, if you enjoy sunbathing without swimwear—there’s a designated nudist area—or if you’re traveling with your dog, you’ll appreciate the peaceful Playa Son Serra de Marina. While dogs are not officially allowed, they are tolerated, making this one of the few beaches on Mallorca where canine companions can roam freely. The moderate waves make it a great spot for surfing, and Café Sol serves delicious food with live music on Friday evenings. Not your scene? How about having a private beach all to yourself? The Beach-Finca Son Serra sits on a sprawling 3-million-square-meter estate that directly borders the sea.
Mallorca’s Most Beautiful Beaches on the East Coast
Cala Torta
This cove near Artà is a place of wild, romantic beauty. Nestled in an untouched, mountainous landscape, it is an ideal stopover during a coastal hike to Cala Mesquida (see below). Jagged cliffs protect the wide natural beach, while the sea here reveals its wilder side. On windy days, high waves roll in, delighting surfers. Snorkeling and diving are also popular activities. However, due to strong undercurrents and limited lifeguard supervision, only experienced swimmers should venture far into the water. After your adventurous day by the sea, the Finca Artà, just ten kilometers away, offers a perfect retreat for relaxation.
Cala Mesquida
This beach seamlessly blends natural beauty with modern comforts. Surrounded by a protected dune landscape since 1991, it boasts 300 meters of fine sand bordering dazzling turquoise waters. The beach is well-equipped with sun loungers, parasols, a beach bar, restrooms, and pedal boat rentals. Thanks to its convenient location near Artà and Capdepera, Cala Mesquida is popular among tourists in summer. If the crowds become overwhelming, retreat to the nearby Beach Finca Cala Ratjada, just a short drive away.
Cala Agulla
Among Mallorca’s most stunning beaches, Cala Agulla—also known as Cala Guya—easily ranks as a top contender. Situated on the edge of a nature reserve, this picture-perfect bay is a favorite retreat for celebrities like Dieter Bohlen. We recommend visiting in the off-season unless you’re seeking a lively party atmosphere, as summer often brings vibrant beach festivities. If you’re looking for a VIP-style vacation, the chic Villa Serena, located slightly further south, is an excellent choice. This elegant holiday home with a sea view is located directly on the coast, offering absolute privacy and private access to the sea.
